About Purbayan
Purbayan Chakraborty is a human rights lawyer based in West Bengal, India. He has been working towards empowering marginalized communities through strategic litigation, legal capacity building, advocacy, and research. He works closely with grassroots movements, including Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity (PBKMS), Paschim Banga Cha Majoor Samity (PBCMS), Sramajeevi Mahila Samity and the Right to Food and Work Campaign, West Bengal, among others. Furthermore, he has spearheaded several strategic litigations for rural agricultural workers, workers employed under the employment guarantee law, tea plantation workers, street vendors, forest dwellers, the urban homeless working class, and communities affected by illegal eviction, which led to several landmark judgments. He has led fact-finding missions which have exposed starvation deaths, hunger, and illegal evictions, resulting in impactful reports and robust advocacy campaigns. Purbayan remains committed to leveraging the law as a tool for justice.
