About Deborah
Debby Schutz, is an artist, poet, and student from the Marshall Islands currently studying at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. If she’s not studying, she enjoys painting and digital illustrating, reading, writing poetry, and watching A24 films. Her experiences stem from working with Jo-Jikum, an environmentalist youth organisation in the Marshall Islands. Working as a consultation collecting data from local rural communities’ experiences with the climate crisis and inquiring on what help they needed to combat these issues. This data was compiled to inform her nation’s Papjelmae (National Adaptation Plan) which was finalised and presented by her climate envoys at COP28.
Additionally, she was a painting instructor for Jo-Jikum’s Climate Change and Health Arts Seminar, an annual program that educates local high school students on the climate issues our islands face and empowers them to advocate for their homes through various art forms.
